THE PRINCIPLE
The principle of the eddy-current dynamometer is based on a simple interaction : as soon as current flows through the excitation coil, a magnetic current is formed whose flux lines close around the coil. If the rotor is moved within this field, eddy currents are induced in the sides of the cooling chamber. These eddy currents construct a counter-magnetic field which then brake the rotor. The influx of mechanical energy is thereby transformed into heat and led off by the water.

The e range of dynamometers provides a range of eddy – current machines designed for testing engines, Electric Motors and Gear Boxes from 0.75 Kw up to 720 Kw and Torque from 0.5 N-m rated to 5000 N-m Rated Torque. eddy current dynamometers are well known for their stability and suitability to operate in a closed loop mode. These provide precise control even at low loads and rapid changes in demands and provide bidirectional operation.

The rugged design of the power absorbing unit ensures a long operating life, even in the most demanding production and endurance testing environments. The rotor which is in form of a spoke disc results in low inertia. The balanced high rigidity shaft assembly on precision bearings ensures smooth operation. This long life is further enhanced by the nickel plating of critical components in contact with the water.

E series dynamometers feature a rugged design & heavy duty single coil i high quality aluminum bobbin. This ensures high reliability. Speed is measured by a pulse sensor mounted adjacent to a 60 tooth wheel on the coupling while torque is measured by a high accuracy strain gauge load cell mounted between the trunnion bearings, supported casings and bedplate. Control is achieved by varying the excitation current to the coils.

THE PRINCIPLE
The dynamometer is fed with water under pressure. When the torridal space is filled with water and the impeller is rotated by the prime - mover, a torridal flow is established outward in the impeller and inward in the stator, which acts as a STALLED TURBINE. Due to the change in momentum experienced by the water in passing from rotating impeller to the stator blade-ring, the torque impressed on the water by the impeller is transferred to the stator. This torque tries to revolve the cradled power absorption unit in the same direction of the impeller.The lever arm attached to the Stator Casing is linked to the Weigh — Bridge. It prevents the rotation of the power absorption unit and transmits the load to the load meter.
